French Polishing |
French Polish Restoration
Traditional French Polishing is a shellac based wood finishing process. French polishing can be a long and repetitive procedure. By applying many thin coats of shellac the French polisher is able to achieve a very high gloss finish, with deep rich colour as well as a toughened protective surface. |

Historically French polishing was used on mahogany and other expensive woods, and was considered to give the best possible finish such as this Victorian Rosewood grand piano. Great care should be taken when cleaning furniture to avoid damaging the protective surface or destroying the natural colour. |
| The typical French polished wood finish is achieved through a combination of different rubbing motions and layers applied over considerable amount of time. Where wood and polish have faded and matured over a long period great care needs to be taken to preserve the patina. This can be achieved using staining and polishing techniques on restored furniture. |
