French Polish Maintenance

Wax Polish

Most furniture only needs “Feeding” once or twice a year with any dirt or marks dry wiped away or cleaned with a damp cloth. If you do have a big build up of wax then it will have to be removed. Some people suggest lemon juice, others just try and put even more wax on!

Furniture Care

A large build up of wax will have to be softened and removed by wiping with soft cloth moistened with white spirit. You will have to repeat the process with new pieces of cloth and white spirit until you are back to the original French Polished or lacquered finish.

Furniture Patina

French polishing is labour intensive, although French polishing still remains one of the easiest finishes to repair. The beauty of old furniture lies in the fact that the wood and the polish have faded and matured over a long period of years and have developed a patina which is very hard to match up to once the surface film is broken through. Great care should be taken when attempting to clean up an old surface ready for restoring.
